Bundaberg Sugar Clocks Up Speed at Pimpama
Bundaberg Sugar Clocks Up Speed at Pimpama
Welcome to 2011 racing! It promises to be exciting with the top NRS and Masters riders joining out ranks.
On the weekend, Simone (myself), Trish Palmer and Loren Rowney travelled to Pimpama to race the Goldstars’ Cycling Club local Pimpama road race to start our racing year together. The Pimpama road race is held the 3rd Sunday of every month and is a 10km hotdog lap course - starting from the Le Mans Kart Track - with undulating hills. Not only that, it’s a good hit out for the legs, attracting a lot of strong riders.
We joined the B Grade men to race 6 laps of the course. The first 2 laps were frenetic as we closed in on the A grade bunch! A grade was looking like the better option until the bunch calmed down and saved some energy for the remaining 4 laps. The Bundy girls held their ground up the front of the pack, surprising a few of the uninitiated men: “Geez you girls are strong!”. We suggested they go and wrap themselves in a space blanket to get over the shock.
The bunch was whittled down to approximately half by the end of the race and in a fast and crazy downhill finish, Loren managed to scoot through to claim 2nd overall! Loren is coming back from a nasty elbow injury, so to see her back up the pointy end of the race is great. Trish and I finished in the main bunch to claim 2nd and 3rd women respectively. From this early form it looks like 2011 will be a good year!
The Crestmead Sizzling Summer Series (Criterium) is next on the race calendar. Stay tuned.
